AAGB-2019

Since the first International Peanut Conference held in Guangzhou, China in 2006, the international peanut research community has worked through the International Peanut Genome Initiative (IPGI) to integrate genetics, genomics and biotechnological approaches into the process of developing effective, environmentally friendly solutions that mitigate economic risks of peanut production. The IPGI has facilitated and improved collaboration between international scientists and stakeholders through a series of international conferences on Advances in Arachis through Genomics and Biotechnology (AAGB), which provide a forum to develop, implement, and report results of scientific research toward strategic plans that ultimately lead to more productive varieties and products of more exceptional quality. The international peanut community through IPGI has come a long way, from lack of availability of molecular markers to the completion and releases of high-quality genome sequences of two diploid (2014) and cultivated peanuts (2018). However, there remains a long way to go for genomics-assisted breeding to see routine implementation. Nevertheless, the stage is now set to harvest the fruits of genomics research for peanut improvement. This will contribute to the entire peanut community, and global food safety in general to fight malnutrition.
